A four-step check
Turn a buyer’s number into a useful comparison
Prepare the item, estimate its metal value, then compare like-for-like net offers.
Identify the purity mark
Look for marks such as 10K, 14K, 18K, 22K, 417, 585, 750, or 916. Treat the mark as a clue, not proof.
Estimate metal value
Subtract known non-gold weight when it can be determined safely, then calculate the reference melt value.
Compare net offers
Ask each buyer for the amount you would actually receive after fees. Enter that number to see its percentage of melt value.
Questions to ask a buyer
- What weight and purity did you use?
- What gold reference price did you use, and at what time?
- Are any testing, refining, shipping, or service fees deducted?
- Is this the final amount I will receive?
- How long is the quote valid?
